James Wyndel Tackett

Funeral services for James Wyndel Tackett 84, Athens have been scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Saturday August 20, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Athens with Rev. Perry Smith and Rev. Andrew Wolfe officiating.
Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens.
Mr. Tackett passed away Wednesday morning in Athens.
He was born February 3, 1932 in Dublin to the late James Elder and Vera Vee Stephen Tackett. After high school graduation, he married his school sweetheart Willetta Cowan. A 1953 graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station, he moved to Henderson County and soon thereafter became the youngest County Extension Agent in the state of Texas, at the time. While the County Extension Agent for Henderson County he was one of the founding members of the Henderson County Livestock Show, and The Athens Chamber of Commerce Farm and Ranch Tour, both of which are still going strong today. In 1961, Wyndel was hired by Clint W. Murchison Sr. as the manager of his vastly growing ranching operation, now known as AnLaCo Ranches for which he managed for 42 years. Additionally, he also managed the ranches of Wofford Cain, a friend of Clint Murchison. Wyndel received numerous awards and recognition in the Agricultural and Ranching field. Among those; In 1989 he received the first ever, Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist of the Year Award, presented by the Athens Chamber of Commerce. In 1996, he received the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association, Man of the Year in Texas Agricultural award.
He was preceded in death by his daughter; Loretta Kay (Lorie) Watkins of Ravenna, daughter-in-law; Kalene Glass Tackett of Plano, and grandson Joshua (Josh) Lee Tackett of Athens.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Willetta Cowan Tackett, daughter; DiAnn Roberts and husband Don of Plano, sons; Steve Tackett and wife DiAnn of LaRue, Lee Tackett and wife Kim, Athens, and son -in-law Tommy Watkins of Ravenna, 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Chris Curd, Wil Kurth, retired General Kevin Wooten, Norm Wisinger, Mark Thomas and Casey Wiley.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Mark Abadie, Kenneth McGee, Jerry Stone, Gayle Finch, Rex Holmes, Charlie Fry and Floyd Blount.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Henderson County Livestock Show Wyndel Tackett Scholorship Fund, P.O. Box 1372 Athens, Texas 75751.
