Paul Lawrence Marcotte

Date Of Birth: August 28, 1946
Date Of Death: August 8, 2016

Paul Lawrence Marcotte died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Parkdale, Oregon on August 8th, 2016. He had a wonderful last weekend filled with social activities: visiting with friends and family, working in the garden, laughing, movie going, and riding his bike. He was looking forward to swimming in the upcoming U.S. Masters Summer National Championship meet at Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center and completing the Aluminum Man Triathlon, in The Dalles, Oregon, in the 70 year old age group. Against all odds, he survived pancreatic cancer in his middle years and went about his life with a purpose and vision for a better world by working on some of our most pressing global agricultural, natural resource, and social challenges.

Paul was born August 28, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Charles Ronald Marcotte Jr. and Julia Joering Marcotte. He was the youngest of three sons, and loved his brothers “Ronny and Flip”. Paul went to Our Mother of Sorrows for elementary school, was good at baseball and nicknamed “Spider” because he was all arms and legs. He swam for Purcell High School in Cincinnati and loved taking fishing trips with his father and brothers in Florida as a teen. Once after struggling and catching a five foot barracuda, he called out for “an ice cold one”, meaning a Coke!

He traveled the world and throughout the decades called various places home: Ohio, Texas, Kentucky, Washington, Arizona, California, Oregon, Thailand, The Netherlands, and The Philippines.

Paul had a passion for sports of all kinds and felt at home in the outdoors. He was eager to introduce others to the things that inspired him and often went out of his way to create opportunities to do so. He had a life full of rich experiences and loved sharing (and embellishing) stories for dramatic effect. He was a great listener and listened to anyone and everyone unless they told him he could not do something or something could not be done.

Paul received his B.A. in political science and M.A. in International Relations from the University of Cincinnati, followed by a M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University, and a PhD in Rural Sociology and International Development from the University of Kentucky.

He held many professional positions throughout the years. Paul was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, which set the stage for a life and career focusing on international development. He was a Rockefeller Fellow, and head of training at the Consultative Group’s International Service to National Agricultural Research (ISNAR) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in The Philippines. He taught International Agricultural Development and Community Development at the University of California, Davis, including field courses in Thailand, India, Panama, and Mexico. He also served as the International Programs Director at UC Davis, leading the Humphrey Fellows Program and went on to work as a consultant for the Horticultural Innovation Lab, led projects for Cornell's Agricultural Innovation Project in India and worked extensively throughout Asia and Latin America throughout his life. While at UC Davis, Paul served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the International Agricultural Development Graduate Group, Director of the Indian Tamil Nadu Agricultural University/UC Davis Scientific Exchange program, and was selected as “Teacher of the Year” for multiple programs during his tenure at UC Davis.

In his “semi-retirement” in Oregon, he spent his time becoming a Master Gardener, building market gardens with neighbors, working on community gardens in Parkdale and at the Farmers Market in Hood River and other Columbia Gorge markets. He trained for and completed triathlons in The Dalles, and accompanied family and friends to special places like Lost Lake, Laurance Lake and Apple Valley BBQ. He enjoyed cycling, hiking, yoga, and making new friends. It was easy to spend time with Paul; his sense of humor was as irreverent as his eyebrows, and his sense of adventure was boundless.

He is survived by Aunts Ruth Joering Sgroi and Carol Joering Wimberg, Uncle Jim Joering, from Cincinnati Ohio, as well as his two brothers and their families: Philip E. Marcotte and Mary Ann (Meyer) Marcotte, of Parkdale, Oregon and Charles Ronald Marcotte III and Sharon Lester Marcotte, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Paul never married or had children of his own, but treated all eight of his nieces and nephews as his own throughout his life. He is survived and loved by many in Oregon, Michigan, and Ohio: Julianne (Marcotte) and Tim Hershey and family, Joseph W. and Kim (Hunter) Marcotte and family, James P. Marcotte, Katie L. (Marcotte) and Ryan Duncan and family, Kevin L. Marcotte and Kim Garcia, Chris Marcotte and family, Shawn and Sharon Marcotte and family, Kathleen (Marcotte) and Joseph Nusbaum and family. He has sixteen grand nieces and nephews and 1 great – grand niece. He has loved and watched many of these young children grow over the past six years while living in Parkdale.
Paul is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Julia Joering Marcotte.

Please join his family for a Celebration of his life on August 28th at 2pm (what would have been his 70th birthday!) at 7735 Baseline Dr. Parkdale, Oregon.

Generous is a word that describes Paul to his family and friends. He gave freely and tirelessly all that he possessed: knowledge, love, humor, time, and spirit. His generosity was always sincere and more than you ever expected! He was truly a kind and unselfish man. Thank you to his large community of family and friends worldwide, we know he made an impact on our world and will be missed by many.
