"Softly call the muster"
Jack D. Hedge, family man, professional engineer, banker and citizen-soldier was born Feb. 17, 1928 at Dallas, Texas, the son of Camille Marie and Ed Lewis Hedge. He passed away August 14, 2016 at Dallas. He was a beloved father, son and husband. Jack graduated from Texas A&M University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and with a Commission as a Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, United States Army. He was licensed as a Professional Engineer by the State of Texas for 62 continuous years. He began his engineering career with the Texas Highway Dept. and served that organization for 15 years. Ordered to active duty from the Army Reserve in 1951, he served in the combat zone of the Korean War as a Company Commander of Engineers. He remained active in the Army Reserve, retiring after 30 years as a Colonel of Engineers and having received the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal twice, and the Korean Service Medal with 3 campaign stars. He graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College, with honors, in1968. As a banker he co-founded two commercial banks serving as the Vice President of the Neches National/First National Bank of Silsbee, Texas, and as the President and CEO of the Lake Cities State Bank of Lake Dallas, Texas over a period of 23 years. Returning to engineering in 1990, he was the Assistant Director of the Program and Engineering Management Division of the Dallas County Public Works Department, retiring at age 87. A life long Baptist, he was a long-time member of the Park Cities Baptist Church. He was fully involved in the communities in which he lived, serving as President of both the Silsbee and Lake Cities Chambers of Commerce, having co-founded the latter. He was a little league baseball coach in the Lake Cities area. An amateur historian, he was a long-time member of the Texas Folklore Society. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Jo Coleman of Silsbee; his two sons, Jack Coleman Hedge of Los Angeles, California and Jeffrey Parker Hedge of Dallas; two grandchildren, Jaclynne Marie Hedge and Coleman Randall Thomas Hedge of Puyallup, Washington; and brother, Joe E. Hedge of Dallas. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 18, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Park Cities Baptist Church Ellis Chapel.
