Roy Lee Abbott, 81, passed away August 6, 2016 at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Roy was born January 5, 1935 in Winters, TX to Sterling and Minnie Abbott. The family moved to Tabor, Texas and he later graduated from Bryan High School. He was a proud "Aggie" and graduated from Texas A&M University.
The sons of a share cropper, Roy and his brother Floyd, learned invaluable lessons about hard work, the value of a dollar, keeping a positive outlook, and the grace of God. Roy enjoyed life! He was the first in his family to attend college, learned how to golf late in life and in the midst of living with Alzheimer's, if asked how he was doing, he would often respond, "if things were any better here, I'd have to hire you to help me enjoy it!"
Roy worked for Traveler's Insurance Company, where he worked his way into Claims Management prior to his retirement in 1993. He took pride in his many professional relationships.
He was an avid Iowa State and Cubs fan and enjoyed watching games with his family and friends. He loved playing golf, traveling, visiting and his daily "meetings" with the gang.
Roy is survived by his brother Floyd (Erma) Abbott, Joshua, TX; son Derek (Tessa) Abbott; daughter Cindy (Chad) Roby; step-daughter Dianne (Blake) Weber; step-daughter Susan (Greg) Milewski, Kingwood, TX; a niece and nephew; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His parents, and his wife Aloris Abbott preceded Roy in death.
Visitation at Westover funeral home Saturday 10am. Funeral will follow at 11:30am.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
