Arthur Edward "ED" Rice
September 24, 1953 - July 27, 2016

Arthur Edward “Ed” Rice was born on September 24, 1953 to Arthur Marvin Rice and Joyce Elizabeth Bade Rice in Houston, Texas. Ed passed away at his home in New Ulm, Texas on July 27, 2016.

Ed is survived by his wife Louise Kaye Haegelin Rice, his mother Joyce Elizabeth Bade Rice, his sister Elizabeth Rice Moore and husband David, nephew Daniel, nieces Amanda and Melissa, sister-in-law Rhoda Kirkwood and husband Jim, sister-in-law Emily Petty and husband Ralwes and mother-in-law Nancy Haegelin and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is proceeded in death by his father Arthur Marvin Rice.

Ed attended Memorial High School in Houston, Texas where he played football, but a broken leg ruined that dream! He graduated from Texas A & M University in 1975. After graduating, he worked with his father as an MEP Engineer and after his father’s death continued the business. Ed enjoyed history, especially WW II history. He enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, boating, hunting, country and western music, cooking, working on his ranch and harvesting the grapes in his vineyard in New Ulm. In the past, he was President of the New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department, on the board of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, member of the Knights of the Vine and the Austin County Grape Growers Committee. He was a member of the West End Historical Society, Texas Sportsman Association and the Cat Spring Agricultural Society.

Ed and Louise have been married for 30 years. They divided their time living in both Houston and New Ulm until two years ago when they moved to New Ulm permanently. They enjoyed traveling and taking cruises together. They traveled to Alaska, Florida, Portugal, Germany, Italy, England, France and many other places abroad. Ed was a big man with a sensitive heart and a loving husband. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

The funeral July 31, 2016, at 2:00 pm, Knesek Bros Funeral Chapel and the Interment at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Industry, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department, P O Box 14, New Ulm, TX 78950 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, website: shrinershospitals.org/donate .

The family would like to express our sincere thanks for all your kindness, love and support during our time of loss. A special thanks to the Austin County Sheriff’s Department and Austin County EMS.
