Richard D. Heider, 72, of Moline, IL, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016, at his home with his family by his side, after a lengthy battle with melanoma. Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 11:00 a.m., at First Christian Church, 1826 – 16th Street, Moline. A private burial ceremony will follow at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Richard was born in Orange County, CA, on March 19, 1944, the son of Betty and Darrel Kite. Darrel, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, died during WWII when Richard was only six weeks old. Betty later married Ray Heider, who adopted Richard. Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. In 1975, he was married to Pam Breedlove, who survives. He earned a Master’s Degree in Engineering from Texas A & M, and was employed for thirty-six years at the Rock Island Arsenal. He was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Moline, for forty-one years. He was active in Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, and sports with his boys, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Pam, he is survived by sons, Jason and Jeremy; his grandchildren, Sarah and Maddux; and his sister, Linda Kelly. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and a brother. The family requests memorials given to them for donation to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation at the University Of Iowa Hospital, for further research to find cures for all cancers.
