March 14, 1922 - July 27, 2016

Joe Jack Culbertson, Sr. age 94, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016 after a long illness.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Lakeview United Methodist Church.
Officiating will be John Farris, Pastor of Lakeview United Methodist and Ryan Strebeck, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater, Texas. Burial to follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Dalhart, Texas.

Joe Jack Culbertson was born in Dalhart, Texas on March 14, 1922 to W.O. “Bill” Sr. and Gladys McKinney Culbertson. He spent his whole life in Dalhart and at his other home, the family ranch in Harding County, New Mexico. Jack graduated from Dalhart High School in 1940. He attended Texas A&M College as a member of the class of 1944. Due to World War II, Jack’s education was interrupted and he graduated in 1947. During the war Jack served in the Field Artillery receiving the EAME Campaign medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the American Theater Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was ranked as Captain at the time of his honorable discharge.
After returning home, he and Laura Catherine Heald were married on April 6, 1947. They have two children Joe Jack Culbertson, Jr. and Catherine Anne Culbertson Whatley.
Jack was very active in the Lakeview United Methodist Church teaching Sunday School class, serving on various committees, and serving as treasurer for 28 years.
Jack was very active in his community, serving on the Dalhart Airport Board, 15 years; the Country Club board (serving as president); the XIT Museum Board (serving as president), Memorial Cemetery Board (serving as chairman); Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (Exalted Ruler); Dalhart School Board, 10 years (serving as president); XIT Rangers Charter Member and Stockholder; XIT Rodeo and Reunion, 4 years (serving as president); 2002 XIT Parade Marshall; and a Mason for 50 plus years.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, William Oliver and Gladys McKinney Culbertson; wife, Laura Catherine Heald Culbertson; brothers, W.O. Jr., Richard Ray, Milton Eugene; sister Fannie Louise Culbertson Scardello; and half-sister Lulla Belle Miller Halliburton.

He is survived by his son Joe Jack Culbertson, Jr. and wife Vivian of Harding County, New Mexico; and daughter Catherine Anne Culbertson Whatley and husband David of Harding County, New Mexico. Grandchildren: Amanda Culbertson-Gutierrez and husband Eddie of Harding County, New Mexico; Laura Culbertson Smith and husband Josh of Clovis, New Mexico; Rebecca Whatley Browning and husband Ed of Garland, Texas; Brandon Whatley and wife Jenna of Georgetown, Texas. Great-Grandchildren: Andrew Eggart of Harding County, New Mexico; Nathan Eggart of Harding County, New Mexico; Case Smith of Clovis, New Mexico; and Annie Smith of Clovis, New Mexico. Numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Helen Heald Sellers of Arlington, Virginia; Ella Lou Heald McDaniel of Burleson, Texas; and brother-in-law Jack M. Heald, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Tucson, Arizona and "HIS GIRLS" who took very good care of him Margo, Jess, Jessica and Damaris.
