Dr. Glen Stoker Thurgood
1939 ~ 2016
Glen S. Thurgood, age 77 of Highland, UT, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend, passed away on July 18, 2016, surrounded by his loved ones after suffering from painful neuropathy for many years, and finally losing a brief but intense battle with cancer. He was born on May 8, 1939, to Glen Lacy and Lola Lucile Stoker in Westwood, California. He served a full-time mission from 1960-63 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Mexican Mission. After graduating high school a year early, he went on to receive bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, all in Civil Engineering. Glen taught in the Civil Engineering Department at BYU for 38 years. Teaching and mentoring others was a passion that allowed him to have an immeasurable influence on his students, colleagues, and his profession, which has resulted in many lifelong friendships.
Glen married Brenda Judd on May 21, 1971, in the Salt Lake Temple, and they have been blessed with 7 wonderful children and at present, 23 amazing grandchildren. His family was his highest priority and the source of the greatest joy in his life. He loved spending all the time he could with them, especially fishing, hunting, camping, watching BYU sports, doing projects, and working on the family farm. He was always a teacher at heart, and we are grateful for all he taught us throughout his life. While we will miss him dearly, his positive influence will continue in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Glen served in various callings in the Church, such as Bishop, High Councilor, and Primary worker. Glen and Brenda raised their family in Highland in the home he built and in which they have lived for the past 38 years. Before his health declined in recent years, he was actively involved in the community where he served on the City Council, as president of the Highland youth baseball association, and in many other civic capacities.
Glen is survived by his wife, his children Glen (Michelle), Stephanie (David) Hicks, Gary (Jennifer), Steven (Holly), Daniel (Tiffany), and Amanda (Jared) Butterfield; those 23 amazing grandchildren; and his siblings Carolyn, Margil, David, Marvin, and Joyce. Waiting to receive Glen were his son Michael, and his parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at the Highland Central Stake Center located at 5835 W. 10400 N., Highland, Utah. A viewing will be held at the same location from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, and prior to the funeral from 11:30 AM to 12:30 p.m.. Interment will be at the American Fork Cemetery.
