Karon Jane Ashby O'Neal
December 23, 1960 - July 03, 2016
Karon Jane Ashby O’Neal, 55, of Carthage, passed away on Sunday morning, July 3, 2016, in Tyler. She was born on Dec. 23, 1960, in Carthage to James W. and Louise Riggs Ashby. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1979 and attended Panola College where she graduated in 1981. Karon earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Texas A&M University in 1983 and earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1985. She married John William “Bill” O’Neal on Dec. 17, 1993, at Central Baptist Church in Carthage. Karon taught mathematics at Carthage High School for six years. She has been a professor of mathematics at Panola College for the last 25 years. She loved reading, was a talented seamstress, and a gifted musician. Karon was an active and lifetime member of Central Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, played and directed the hand bells, and played the piano and organ. Karon also was proud to serve as “chief of staff” for her husband Bill, who is the State Historian of Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, James W. Ashby and her sister, Sharon Ashby Davis.
Karon is survived by her husband, Bill O’Neal of Carthage; her mother, Louise Ashby of Carthage; daughters, Lynn O’Neal Martinez and husband Rudy of Mansfield, Dr. Shellie O’Neal of Corsicana; Dr. Berri O’Neal and husband Drew Gormley of Colleyville, and Causby O’Neal Henderson and husband Dusty of Van Alstyne; brother, Kevin Ashby and wife Betty Ann of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, Chloe and Jessie Martinez, Bailey and Kendall Henderson, and Addison, Reagan, and Nolan Gormley; nieces and nephews, Brent Davis, Shelley Davis James, Kyle and Katy Ashby, Chris and Molly Smith, and Ross and Ryan O’Neal; and a great-nephew, Ryan James.
A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2016, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Dodson and Rev. Steve Jackson officiating. A private interment will follow in Pattison Cemetery near Corsicana.
Pallbearers are Brent Davis, Kyle Ashby, Matt James, Rudy Martinez, Dusty Henderson, Drew Gormley, Dr. Greg Powell, and Don Clinton.
