Our nation has lost another outstanding member of the greatest generation, and our family has lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Jaime Roman, Sr. passed away on July 16. He passed peacefully at his home in Bryan, Texas surrounded by his loving wife of 53 years, his children, and his grandchildren.
A Life Tribute Services and Roman Catholic funeral Mass will be held at 10am, Friday July 22, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Center. Inurnment will follow in the College Station City Cemetery. Rosary and Visitation will begin at 6:30pm to 8pm on Thursday, July 21, 2016 in the church at St. Mary’s. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers.
Jaime was born September 1, 1926 in Masaya, Nicaragua. He immigrated to the United States in the closing months of World War II and was drafted for military duty while still a Nicaraguan citizen. In a busy year with the U.S. Navy, he obtained both his U.S. citizenship and his high school diploma. He spent the next 10 years working in the banking industry in San Francisco, with a notable year-and-a-half break to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to Nicaragua for the next decade where he oversaw a 400-acre farm, growing sugar, cotton, and coffee. He subsequently purchased the farm after winning the Nicaraguan lottery. By 1971, he had received his M.B.A. from Central American Institute (INCAE) in Managua. Longing to continue his education, he then sold the farm and moved his family to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received a second Master’s Degree in economic and social development. He subsequently moved to Texas, where he rounded out his working years as an extension agent at Texas A&M before retiring to the BCS area. He spent his retired years enjoying his large family and traveling to Latin America – always with suitcases full of clothes and supplies for those less fortunate in the villages he frequented. More than anything, Jaime lived through example: teaching his children and their children the value of hard work, faith, charity, family, dedication, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed.
Jaime is survived by his wife of 53 years, Yelba; son Rene and his wife Diane; son Ronald and his wife Gail; son Gary and his wife Susan; son Danilo and his wife Julieta; son Jaime Jr. and his wife Miriam; daughter Thelma and her husband Jack; daughter Yelba and her husband Roy; son Gustavo and his wife Johanna; 22 grandchildren (Josue, Jocelyn, Jason, Michael, David, Carolyn, Audrey, Bridget, Thelma, Danilo Jr, Jaime III, Sara, Jacquelynn, Jack Robert Jr., Pablo, Carlos, Richard, Michael, Alex, Gustavo Jr., Johan and Alex); 23 great-grandchildren (Mackenzie, Alex, Nick, Aidan, Asher, Isaac, Zeke, Alice, Jack, Zoe, Lydia, Alexander, Benjamin, Camila, Cecilia, Jaime IV, Rachel, Lily, Jonah, Hannah, Jack Robert III, Eleanor, and Isabella); his sister, Indiana Roman-Molina of Managua, Nicaragua; his dear cousin, Henry, and wife Ivonne; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma (1962); his parents, Alberto and Anita Roman; brothers Alberto, Carlos, and Freddy; and sisters Esperanza, Ligia, and Vilma.
The family thanks the staff at Watercrest Independent Living, the Visiting Angels, and Encompass Hospice and Home Health for the compassionate care, support, and many acts of kindness they extended to Jaime and the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Nicaraguan Foundation (anf.networkforgood.com) in memory of Jaime Roman, to benefit Comedor Guadalupe, a soup kitchen for the elderly in his hometown of Jinotepe.
