COLUMBIA - Major Neil Wayne Ellis, U.S. Army Ret., 67, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family and his dog, Deuce. He was born September 16, 1948 in Lawrence, KS while his father was a student at Kansas University. He later moved to Texas, where he grew up and was very proud of his Texas roots. He graduated from Texas A&M University and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. While serving, he earned a Master’s of Education degree from the University of South Carolina. He honorably served for 20 years before he retired. While in the Army he served in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he achieved Senior Jump Wings, 3rd Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division, Southeast Recruiting Command, and ROTC at Columbus College in Columbus, G.A. After retiring from the Army, he worked as the Emergency Manager for Lexington and Richland Counties. Neil was an avid Aggie and Gamecock football fan, fisherman, and golfer.


He was the son of the late Carl T. and Jean Florey Ellis of Waco, TX. He was predeceased by his brother, David Ellis. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Addy Ellis; daughter, Faith Ellis Todd (Jonathan) of Columbia; sons, Matthew Neil Ellis of Columbia, and Christopher Carl Ellis (Meredith) of Wadmalaw Island, S.C; grandchildren, Griffin Ellis-McCants, Brooklyn Mark Stading Ellis, Cooper David Todd, Mary Elizabeth Todd, and Emerson Ann Addy Ellis; brother, Hugh Ellis (JoBeth) of Dawson, TX; and several nieces.


A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Following the service at Fort Jackson, family and friends are invited back to the Ellis home for a drop-in. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Dunbar funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.
