During WWII, Hubert's mom worked at Kelly Field, where one day an officer took young Hu for a short tour of the base. After the tour, Hu used pencil and paper to sketch the amazing aircraft he saw. After the death of her husband, Hubert's mom worked incredibly hard to support him as he attended Texas A&M, where he graduated in 1951 as a distinguished military student.
During his eight years in the USAF, he was in Korea (1952-1953) where he served as Group Maintenance Officer in the 4th Fighter Wing, and was the first engineer to speak to a Mig 15 pilot that had just defected, landing at the base where Hu was stationed.
His slide rule engineering skills reached even greater heights during his years with NASA, where as a Senior Engineer, he oversaw construction of three lunar excursion modules for the Apollo program, including the LEM used in the first manned exploration of the moon.
