Dr. Billye Weaver
January 5, 1940 - June 16, 2016

Dr. Billye Lorene Gommert Weaver, age 76 of Temple, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2016 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, June 20th at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Spinn officiating. Burial will follow at Holland Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday, June 19th at the funeral home.

Dr. Weaver was born in Holland, TX to Walter Frank and Lorene (Folschinsky) Gommert on January 5, 1940. She was married to Jerald Edward Patrick O’Keefe (1960-61) and later to Henry Alfred Weaver (1967-84). She graduated from Holland High School in 1958, and while employed full time graduated from Commonwealth College of Sciences, Houston, TX, Medical Technologist 1959, TJC , Associate Arts degree 1973-75, UMHB, BS degree, 1975-77, Southwest TX State Univ. Master’s degree, 1977-78, Texas A&M University, PhD. 1983-85, and employed at Dr. Bloxson Pediatric Clinic, Houston, King’s Daughters Hospital, Dr. Jones Internal Medicine and Doctor’s Hospital, Dallas, TX, Olin E. Teague VA Center, Temple College. Retired from Temple College 2005 as Department Chair/Program Director of the Medical Laboratory Program. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran in Bartlett, American Society of Clinical Pathology, Clinical Lab. Sciences, American Chemistry and Microbiology Societies, New York Academy of Sciences, Central TX Research, Who’s Who, Texas State Community Colleges, Temple College Faculty Council, Temple ISD PTO. Served on Advisory Committee of Community Colleges, Baylor University and King’s Daughters Hospital for Medical Services Compliance. She was an Evaluator for MLT Programs in US for National Accreditation of Clinical Lab Science and TX Higher Education Board. Received VA Outstanding Performance Award, Temple College Barnhart Teacher of Year Award, NISOD Teaching of Excellence, Girl Scout Women of Distinction Award, and Temple College Outstanding Service Award –25 years. She was involved in medical research and is published in J. of Oncology, J. Urology, J. Cancer Research and J. Gastroenterology.

Billye, known to her grandchildren as “GG,” loved spending time with them and never missed a birthday or important event in the lives of her loved ones. She enjoyed playing the slots with her friends and cooking for her family; known for her famous German chocolate cake. She loved to travel, and had traveled all over the world, sometimes accompanied by her friends, Dr. Sue Hamby and Pat Eicke. When she was not traveling, she was visiting and cooking for many friends at Gommert’s Café in Holland. She loved the USA, outdoors, flowers, and dancing. She was a devoted Christian, believing the Lord was with her at all times of her life, and has now taken her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Carol John, Lionell Gene, Walter Dean, and Darrell Lynn Gommert. She is survived by her devoted family, Jacquelyne Denise (O’Keefe) Wallace and husband, Bass Campbell Wallace, Marla Gayle (Weaver) Simmonds, all of Houston and Anthony Scott Weaver of Copperas Cove and beloved grandchildren, Katelyn Grace and Sydney Bass Wallace, Colton Bowmer, Carlie Lorene and Cade Dewitt Simmonds. Also surviving is her sister, Donna Gayle Mihatsch and husband, Robert of Kerrville and brothers, Jimmy Wayne Gommert, Ronnie Dale Gommert and wife, Georgana of Holland and Jay Don Gommert of Sparks and many nieces and nephews and their families.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Paul Smith, Dr. Robert Anderson and the Palliative care staff at Scott & White Hospital; and to the many friends and neighbors for their love and support.
