Charlie Malone Pollan
December 16, 1926 - June 29, 2016

Charlie Malone Pollan, age 89, of Dallas, Texas, passed away at his home on June 29, 2016 from pancreatic cancer. He was born on December 16, 1926 in Rice, Texas to Charlie Barkley and Flora Mae Barnett Pollan. Charlie faced his illness just as he faced other challenges in his life, with unwavering courage and strength.

He spent his early years in East India, Texas and later moved to Ferris, Texas where he graduated from Ferris High School.

In 1949, Charlie earned a degree in agricultural engineering from Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets.

His college career was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army and served from 1945 until 1947. In 1948, he married Marilyn Larea Witherspoon and their son Charles Malone Pollan Jr. was born 2 months before Charlie graduated from college.

Charlie started Quality Fence Company in 1960, fulfilling his desire to own and run a small business and make it the best it could be. Many of his customers became lifelong friends. Charlie was the backbone of the company until shortly before his death. He ran his business like he lived his life – with honesty, integrity, caring, and a strong work ethic.

Serving the community was important to Charlie. During his 48 year membership in the Park Cities Rotary Club, he was a longtime volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program and also served as a volunteer visitor at C. C. Young Nursing Home. He was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and past president of the International Fence Builders Association.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Charlene Moss Pollan; his son, Charles Pollan and wife Susan, his sister-in-law, Jan Moss Chancelor and husband Ray; grandchildren, Dr. Sarah Cathryn Pollan and Evan Pollan and wife Sarah Jane; and great grandchildren, Sloan White and his dad Dr. David Sloan White, Caroline Pollan, and Ella Grace Pollan and many nieces and nephews.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Maurice (Jim) Pollan, and his first wife, Marilyn Larea Witherspoon Pollan, the mother of his son.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Charlie’s caregivers Maria Torres, Sherry Williams, and Jule Fuentes and to the nurses, aides, and staff of Amity Hospice.

There will be a private family burial with present employees of Quality Fence Company serving as pallbearers. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, at 1:00pm at Highland Park United Methodist Church, Cox Chapel, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Park Cities Rotary Club, 6704 Snider Plaza, Dallas, Texas 75205; VNA Meals on Wheels, 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas 75247; or Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas 75205.
