Marshall D. Gatton
1923-2016
Marshall D. Gatton, Jr. (native Houstonian) was born July 15, 1923 and died June 29, 2016 at age 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Sr. and Audrey Gatton and his first wife of 50 years, Roberta Tegge, also of Houston. Marshall graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1941 and then attended the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas until volunteering for the Army Air Corps when WWII began. Following an honorable discharge, he entered the University of Houston where he met Roberta in the Cougar Den. They married and returned to A&M where Marshall graduated in January 1948 and then began a career with U.S. Fidelity and Guaranty. He retired with 37 years of service in management. During those years, Marshall and Roberta with their children, Carol and Lindol enjoyed their weekends and summers at the family bay house in El Jardin Del Mar on Galveston Bay where they fished, crabbed, and Marshall taught at least 25 adults and kids the art of water skiing. After their children left home Marshall and Roberta sold out in Houston and moved into the bay home where they began to travel before Roberta passed away. Two years later, Marshall married Jodie Plaag of Jamaica Beach on Galveston Island. There they joined the BPOE and made many friends and danced many nights away. They traveled the U.S. by motor car and made 15 cruises throughout the world. Then, in 2007, they left Jamaica Beach and moved to Seabrook, Texas. Marshall was a true Aggie belonging to the Houston A&M Club and the Association of Former Students as a Century Club Member for 40 plus years. Marshall is survived by wife, Jodie Plaag Gatton; daughters, Carol Scott & Lindol Plaag; grandson, Richard Clendenin and wife, Connie; great granddaughter, Alexis Clendenin Pulido and husband, Josh; and great-great grandson, Noah Pulido. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840. Please designate the Class of '45 Sul Ross Corps Scholarship in honor of Marshall Gatton in the memo line of the check. A Graveside service will be held Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Interment will follow.
