Dr. J. Fred Love
November 16, 1936 - June 10, 2016

Dr. Love was born on November 16, 1936 in Brownwood to Vernon and Donnie Love. He was a graduate of Irving High School, Arlington State as well as Texas A&M University. He served in the United States Naval Reserves with the Sea Bees 1956 until 1962. He married Fern Recconu on May 23, 1959 in Richland Hills.

Dr. J. Fred Love joined Amarillo Veterinary Clinic in 1961. Amarillo Veterinary Clinic was founded in 1938 by Dr. Luther M. Griffin. Later, Dr. Griffin added Dr. Loyal L. Rush in the 1950s before he retired. The clinic served small and large animals throughout most of its existence. In 1961, Dr. J. Fred Love came to Amarillo Veterinary Clinic as a newly-graduated veterinarian. Dr.’s Love and Jenkins became the primary veterinarians and partners from the late 1960’s through the 1970’s.

Dr. J. Fred Love and his wife (Fern), having grown up near Dallas-Fort Worth, set new roots in the panhandle to raise their family (one son and two daughters) and build the practice into what it is today. Dr. J. Fred Love purchased the clinic from Dr. Jenkins when he retired in 1980 and has continued the mission of Amarillo Veterinary Clinic.

In 1992, Dr. J. Fred Love was proud to welcome his daughter Dr. Donna Love Regehr to practice by his side. He had a passion for treating pets as if they were his own and helped countless pets over the years he practiced.

Dr. Love loved his Lord and his family. He was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. Dr. Love had a great lifetime love for calf roping. He was a long time member of the RCA (Rodeo Cowboy Association) before it became the PRCA. He was also an avid tennis player. Dr. Love was a Mason and was a member of Carson Lodge # 1167. He was a long time member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Academy of Veterinary Practice, and the High Plains Veterinary Medical Association.



He is survived by his wife, Fern of Panhandle, two daughters, Dr. Donna Love Regehr and husband Matthew of Panhandle, Dr. Anna Marie Love and her husband George Ebertin of Denton and by his son, J. Fred Love and wife Tina of Amarillo. One sister, Mari Jon “MJ” Love of Johnson City. He is also survived by three grandchildren who he loved very much, Brad, Tara and Breanna and 1 great grandchild Blythe.
