John Gabriel passed away Friday, June 17, 2016, at the age of 65. A private service will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Cathedral in the Pines. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 21, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home.
John was born in Tyler on April 14, 1951, to Bruce and Rosemary Gabriel. He grew up in Tyler and graduated in 1969 from Robert E. Lee High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering December 1972 from Texas A&M, College Station. He was a member of Company F-1 Corps of Cadets. He received his Certificate of Registration to practice as a Professional Engineer on March 31, 1977.
In December 1973, he married his good friend from high school, Barbara Edge. John worked for the city of Garland before returning to Tyler in 1977 to learn the oil and gas business while working with his father-in-law, Bob Edge. He retired in 2011 after 35 years in the oil and gas business.
John served on the Board of the All Saints Episcopal School 1985-87 and as Board President 1987-88. He also served as chairman of the East Texas Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers 1989-1990.
John is survived by his wife Barbara; his son Bob Gabriel and daughter-in-law Lindsey of Houston; his daughter Greer Del Rio and son-in-law Serg of New Braunfels; and grandchildren Madeleine, Preston and Molly Gabriel and Blythe Del Rio. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Debby and Tony Lomando of Las Vegas; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Jack Langston of Tyler; and mother-in-law Norma Edge Halfpenny of Tyler.
