Ernest B. Rogers, Jr. died Monday, June 13, 2016, at The Oaks retirement home in Orangeburg. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ernest B. Rogers, Jr. will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, followed
by private burial in Lee County. Memorials may be sent in Mr. Rogers’ memory to Multiple Sclerosis Society of SC, Suite 206, 2712 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204 or a charity of one’s choice.
Born Dec. 20, 1924, in Sumter, Mr. Rogers attended Clemson for two years, then served in the U.S. Army Air Forces for three years. He returned to Clemson, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering. After receiving a Master of
Science from Texas A&M University in 1952, he joined the faculty at Clemson, where he taught engineering until retiring from the University in 1978. He served one term as president of the Faculty Senate, and he also served as chairman of the South Carolina
Chapter of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE).
After retiring from Clemson, Mr. Rogers moved to Orangeburg, where he worked for Applied Engineering Co. for nine years, followed by 13 years with McCall-Thomas Engineering Co. During that time, he served as chairman of the South Carolina Board of Registration
for Engineers and Land Surveyors. He was licensed to practice engineering in South Carolina and Texas and also was a licensed pilot.
In 1961 he won a top award from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pa., for bringing about a better understanding of the American way of life with his essay titled “Responsibility and Freedom: Our Heritage and Our Hope.”
Mr. Rogers was a longtime, active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Orangeburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Luther Rogers and Ernest B. Rogers, Sr.; his wife, Betty Lee Rogers, and his sister, Anne Rogers Gambrell.
Survivors include his daughters, Beth Thompson of Belmont, N.C., and Becky Quattlebaum and her husband, Ed Quattlebaum, of Annapolis, Md.; grandchildren, Billy Quattlebaum of Washington, D.C., and Lee Thompson of Baltimore, Md.; and brother, Luke Rogers of
Sumter.
