Dr. Roger Burton Thompson
May 29, 1937 - June 2, 2016 Dr. Roger Burton Thompson, 79, of Ashville, Alabama passed away June 2, 2016 in Birmingham Dr. Thompson was born in Elyria, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine where he attained his DVM. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He attended Texas A&M University where he received his PhD in Veterinary Pathology and went on to teach Veterinary Pathology at LSU. Dr. Thompson retired from Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama after 18 years of service. At the time of his retirement he was Department Head of Veterinary Pathology. After his retirement from Southern Research he opened his own consulting research business where he studied cancer research. He was an avid bass fisherman and loved nature. He enjoyed woodworking and made bluebird houses for his friends. He also enjoyed traveling. Dr. Thompson was a member of Greensport Baptist Church. Dr. Thompson was survived by his beloved wife, Mary; daughter, Lynda Gatlin (Wade); son, Jeff A. Thompson (Terri); sister, Jean Gregory; and by two grandchildren, Jonathan L. Thompson and Katie R. Thompson. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday June 5, 2016 at Greensport Baptist Church with Rev. Lamar Guyton officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Greensport Baptist Church, 9260 Shoal Creek Road, Ashville, Alabama 35953.
