Although Arthur "Art" Newman was a successful San Antonio business executive, his greatest love next to his family was sports-especially baseball. He was a pitcher during his college years at Texas A & M University, but the title he cherished most was one he was given in the 1960s, when he coached Little League and Pony League baseball in the Alamo Heights area. From then on he was known simply as 'The Coach,' and many still remember him by that title," said his daughter, Kathy Kinder. He coached boys for more than 10 years, including his two sons.

Mr. Newman, 92, passed away peacefully, on April 29, following a short illness. He was born June 27, 1923, in New York City to Katherine and Emanuel Newman and when he was five years old, he moved to San Antonio with his parents.

Art graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1941. He enrolled at Texas A & M University, where he played short stop and pitched for A&M's baseball team. Shortly after enrolling, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in World War II, where he was sent to the European front. He was awarded the Bronze Star. When the war ended, he returned to College Station and received a bachelor's degree from Texas A & M.

After college, he and several Army friends traveled together to visit other war buddies on the East Coast. In Philadelphia, they visited William Grabow, who had a younger sister, Helen. "She was 18, and it really was love at first sight," said Kathy. "It was a whirlwind romance and they married immediately."
After their marriage, the Newmans moved to Denver, where Art graduated from the Denver School of Law. In 1951, they moved to San Antonio to raise their family and Art joined Professional Pharmacal Inc.

Founded by his father, in 1943, the company manufactured prescription eye, ear and nose medicine at their plant on Josephine Street. In 1969, the company manufactured an eye drop that was taken on Apollo 11-the first spaceflight that landed humans on the moon, according to Harry Newman, Art's younger brother. Art remained at the company as vice president until 1972 when Warner-Lambert purchased the company.

Art was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Helen, and his parents, Katherine and Emanuel Newman.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses-- Kathy Kinder (Buddy); Blake Newman (Mary), Frisco and Cole Newman (Kim); two grandchildren, Hilary Kye Kinder, Los Angeles, and Crede Kinder (Marcia), Dallas; a brother, Harry, and his very special companion, Sylvia Smith.

The family would like to thank all the care givers and staff members at the Forum at Lincoln Heights, Avionn Home Health Care and Heart to Heart Hospice.

A small family memorial service was held earlier this month. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Humane Society.
