John Roger Ballard
Date of Birth: November 27, 1920 | Date of Death: December 31, 2010 | Service Date: 10:30 A.M., Friday, January 7, 2011, at First Christian Church, 3105 R.R. 12 in San Marcos.

John Roger Ballard, age 90, joined his two sons, John G and James W Ballard, and a host of family and friends in Heaven, Friday, December 31, 2010.

He leaves behind his faithful wife, Alice Attaway Ballard. He is also survived by his younger brother, Neil E. Ballard, his wife Carol, nephews Dwight and Jeffrey Sturrock, Keith and Bruce Ballard, nieces Anne Ballard, Pamela Ballard, and Becky Sturrock Larremore as well as numerous cousins and close friend, Ed Jones. He enjoyed his Wednesday morning gathering with his friends at the Kettle and his Friday noon lunch bunch at the Imperial Gardens, as well as many friends.

John was born in San Antonio November 27, 1920 to John Ballard and Ola Eunice Rogers. He graduated from Waco High School and returned to San Antonio after graduation. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College, He served as a civilian employee for San Antonio Air Technical Service Command from 1942-1944. He was inducted in the Navy and served as a Seabee in the Pacific from 1944-1946. After discharge from the Military he taught for ten years at Freer High School, during which time he pursued his Master’s degree from SWT. In 1956 he came to San Marcos to teach at SWT where he taught for more than 30 years. He received his Doctor of Education degree in 1966 from Texas A&M University. He received recognition in the following professional honorary fraternities: Epsilon Pi Tau; Iota Lambda Sigma; Phi Kappa Phi; Phi Delta Kappa..

John was one of several who formed the Association of Texas Technology Education originally known as Texas Industrial Arts Association in 1955. He was the secretary/treasurer from 1955-1959. He received the Certificate of Honor for service from 1958-1969. He was executive secretary from 1961-1965. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 1986.

In 1991 he was recognized as Professor Emeritus of Southwest Texas State University.

He had an absolutely awesome influence on his students as well as his profession. He was a fine Christian man and very professional in everything that he did and with all that he met. He loved his Lord, his church, and his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Christian Church on Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Christian Church or to a benevolent organization of your choice.
