Celebration of life services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2016, in Trinity Fellowship Church Chapel with Jim Snead officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

William “Bill” Byron Johnson was born August 12, 1932 in Henderson, TX. He grew up in East Texas and graduated from High School in Tyler. He attended Texas A&M University where he was a proud member of the Army Corp of Cadets. While in college, Bill taught himself to play the guitar, which was one of his life-long passions. Upon graduation, Bill joined the Army Reserve, which he served for a number of years and retired as a captain.

After college, Bill moved to Dalhart, Texas where he worked for the Soil Conservation Service. In 1956, Bill married Editha Crawford. They were married for 49 years until her death in early 2005.

In 1963, Bill moved his family to Vega, Texas where he lived for 42 years. He owned and operated Golden Spread Growers, which later became Sunripe Inc. Sunripe was well known throughout the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico for delicious hot house tomatoes beautiful poinsettias, Easter Lilies, as well as garden and house plants. He also owned and operated Johnson’s Vega Greenhouse up until his retirement. Bill continued after retirement to work as a landscaper in the Amarillo area up until he was 82 years old.

Bill served as a faithful member of Vega United Methodist Church for over 40 years. He was a member of the choir, played the guitar, and taught Sunday school. He enjoyed music and played in several county and blue grass bands for close to 60 years. He also enjoyed outreach ministry, especially with his good friend Jimmy Watkins. They served together for many years in the Amarillo area at Faith City Missions among other places. Bill also served on the Vega City Council, several civic organizations and was an enthusiastic volunteer at the annual Vega Round Up celebration.

In July of 2005, Bill married Mary Strickland and moved to Amarillo. Bill and Mary have been members of Trinity Fellowship for the past 11 years. They enjoyed 11 wonderful years together, serving in ministry as well as being wonderful friends to many people in the Amarillo area. Bill loved spending time with Mary and travelling to spend time with their large blended family. They have truly enriched each other’s lives. They have loved, laughed, encouraged, and mentored all that they have been around. Bill and Mary are known as faithful prayer warriors to all in need.

Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Editha, their infant son Stevie Johnson, son in law Gregg Arcinec, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include: Wife Mary Johnson of the home in Amarillo, Texas; Daughter and son in law Kathy and Chris Howard of Keller, Texas; Son and daughter in law Keith and Vivian Johnson of Amarillo, Texas; Daughter Raynell Ancinec of Levelland Texas; Daughter and Son in law Anita and Jim Snead of Levelland, Tx ; Daughter Susie Cotton of Brownwood, Tx; Daughter and son in law Jana and Jim Dowell of Levelland, Tx; Son and Daughter in law David and Darla Strickland of Amarillo; Son and daughter in law Steve and Wendy Strickland of Amarillo, Tx; twenty two grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
