He was born in Burt County, Nebraska on July 2, 1922 to Leland Shumway Paine and Margaret Herman Paine. He grew up in College Station, Texas where his father taught at Texas A&M. After serving three years in the Pacific Theater in World War II, Mr. Paine returned to Texas and married Vernelle Brown of Marlin. After retirement, he and Vernelle embarked on frequent trips in their recreational vehicle, visiting forty-six of the contiguous forty-eight states. He also continued his life-long love affair with the automobile and was happiest with a wrench in his hand.
