Funeral services for Dan Wallace Spears, Sr. of Temple, formerly of Houston, age 87, will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel in Belton, TX with Rev. Gary Anthony officiating. Burial will be at North Belton Cemetery.
The Family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Spears died Friday, April 29, 2016 in a Temple nursing center of natural causes.
Mr. Spears was born October 6, 1928 in Belton, the son of Eunice and George Spears. He was a graduate of Belton High School in 1946 where he was a captain of the Varsity football team, played Varsity basketball and he was on the track team. He was president of the student council, an honor student and an Eagle Scout with Palms Awards. He was a 1950 graduate of Texas A&M University where he played Varsity football, was an honor student and a Cadet Lt. Col, and later 2nd Lt. United States Army Reserve. He served as a combat artillery captain in Korea receiving combat and merit awards with the 7th Infantry Division, 48th Field Artillery Battalion and now a Retired Col, USAR.
He was a Cub and Boy Scout Leader, President of the Westchester High School PTA and Athletic Booster Club, and was Vice President for High School Relations for the Texas A&M Former Students.
Mr. Spears was a life long member of the Baptist Church every where he lived. He helped start Bergen Baptist Church in New Jersey. He was a member of Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston from 1963 to 2003 where he served as Deacon, taught Sunday School and was a Scoutmaster. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Temple since 2003.
He retired from Gulf Oil's Computer Division in 1986, and then worked as a part time consultant until 1995.
He believed in the ideals of the Holy Bible and Thomas Jefferson.
He married Juel Merle McGee in 1951 in Galveston. She preceded him in death in 2003. He married Polly Morgan Daniel in April 2004 in Temple.
Mr. Spears was preceded in death by his parents, brother George, wife Juel Merle, Daughters Patricia and Martha and daughter-in-law Cheryl.
Survivors include his wife Polly Morgan Daniel Spears, two sons Dan Spears, Jr. and John Spears and step daughter Susan Smith; six grandchildren, Diana Levy, Jennifer Spears, Harriet Spears and George Spears, Tamara Westfall and Brandon Spears; two great grandchildren Emma and Jack Levy; and two step grandchildren, Jennifer Smith and Chet Smith
Memorials may be made on behalf of the family to the American Cancer Society or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
