Joe A. Vancil 
(July 13, 1933 - March 24, 2015) 

March 24, 2015 at his home at the age of 81.

He was born July 13, 1933 in Hatchel to Ralph and Thelma (Spann) Vancil. Joe graduated from Ballinger High School. Receiving a football scholarship from Texas Christian University, he lettered in baseball and football during his freshman year. He transferred to Texas A&M University for his sophomore year where he was a member of the corps. During the summers he worked in the oil field to help with college expenses. Joe graduated from A & M in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in Ag Business. He worked as an oil and gas production engineer for GW Strake Company and WP Carr Company. He was member of the Texas Brangus Cattle Association, Southern Cattle Raiser Association, National Beef Cattle Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association. He also served as Director and President of the North Runnels Water Supply Corporation at the time it was organized. His unselfish dedication to his family and his numerous contributions to his work and his community were evident.

Joe served in the Army and was a member of American Legion Post #8 in Ballinger.

Kindhearted and quiet, Joe was the picture of a gentleman cowboy. He spent his life ranching, operating a portion of the ranch initially established by his grandfather, Isaac (Doc) Vancil in the early 1880’s.

Joe married Patricia Franke on September 2, 1972, and they shared 42 devoted years together.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Pat; son, Jay Vancil of Sweetwater; daughter, Megan Durham and husband Ray of San Angelo. He was Papa Joe to granddaughters, Madison (his “Maddy girl”) and Rylie Durham of San Angelo. Survivors also include numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, March 27 at St. Joseph Family Center in Rowena with Rosary following at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Ariel Lagunilla officiating along with Father Bhaskar Morugudi. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, offerings may be made to St. Joseph Building Fund, Hospice of San Angelo or a favorite charity.
