Calvin Millington
Calvin Millington went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 26, 2015, in Tyler.

He was born in Tyler on Feb. 1, 1927, to W.F. and Perla Mae Millington. He grew up in the Tyler's Liberty Hill community and graduated from Tyler High School in 1944. After graduation he attended Texas A&M, where he was a member of the Corps before serving in the United States Navy from 1946 until 1948. On Oct. 8, 1946, he married his wife, Hazel Marie Curry. They returned to Tyler in 1948 where he worked for Lasater and Barton Grocery. In 1953 he began his career as a home builder in Tyler, which expanded to a real estate business. One of his homes, in the Tanglewood subdivision, was in the first Tyler Parade of Homes.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and in 1955 he and Hazel were a part of a missionary team that began a satellite church now known as Green Acres Baptist Church. There he was a deacon, where he served on numerous boards and committees, as well as helping to support other local churches in their growing ministries. In 1962 he brought his knowledge of business and building to East Texas Savings & Loan, where he served in positions as treasurer, improvement loan officer and vice president. In 1980 he was promoted to the Mortgage Loan Department as a senior vice president and later executive vice president in 1981. He retired in 1982 as President of ETSL Development Company.

After retirement he and Hazel enjoyed their home in the mountains at Ridgecrest, North Carolina. In 1997 he again used his gifts and talents for building, and they left Green Acres to help begin the Woods Baptist Church, where they were members.

Calvin was a member of the Board of Directors of the East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, where he also served on the Finance Committee and was the recipient of the James B. Fisher Lifetime Achievement award, and named Board Member Emeritus after retiring from the board. He is a past-president of the Vine Avenue YMCA where he served on its board of directors. He has also been president of Tyler Kiwanis Club, the Home Builders Association and chairman of the Parade of Homes.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Marie Millington, on Feb. 21, 2015; his parents; brother, Frank Millington; sister, Patsy Sherrod Filemyr; and grandson, Andrew Murphey.

He is survived by his daughter, Jan Murphey and husband Shannon; son, John Millington and wife Patti; grandchildren, Amanda Wilkinson and husband Vince, Abigail Murphey, John C.
