Stephen Ryan Speights
September 29, 1948 - December 1, 2014
Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Stephen R. Speights, 66, of San Antonio and Bryan, Texas passed away December 1, 2014. He was born and spent his childhood in Bryan and lived in San Antonio for 25 years.
He attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, graduating in 1966. He earned two degrees from Texas A&M University; a Bachelor of Science in Zoology (1970) and a Master of Science in Microbiology (1972). He was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.
After Texas A&M, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and retired in 1994 as a Lt. Col. after serving in the Army Medical Service Corps. His duties included managing several of the Army’s medical laboratories, including service as Commander
of the laboratory in Landstuhl, Germany. He was recognized with the Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal three times.
Steve found great joy in knowing God and being with family and friends. He was a life-long learner and after retirement earned a teaching certification to teach health sciences in secondary schools. His children will treasure the many things he restored and
created including hand-crafted wood picture frames, classic Ford Mustangs and family geneology items. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips, travel and being a terrific “Santa”. His humor and excitement at family gatherings will be missed.
He was predeceased by his mother, Peggy Speights and his father, Dr. Durwood Speights of Bryan. He is survived by his four children and their families; Chris and Christi Speights of League City, Texas, John and Kristi Speights also of League City, TX, Sarah
Speights and stepson Michael Marshall of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by three sisters, their husbands and families: Sharyn and Dan Galvin of Bryan, Laurie and Jody Johnston of Tampa, FL and Julie and Mike Hogan of Denver, CO.
