Lake Ridge Chapel And Memorial Designers obituary

Howard 'Jack' Green
April 23, 1925 - November 14, 2014

Howard W. “Jack” Green—a beloved family man, successful businessman and community servant—died at age 89 on November 14, 2014. Jack was born on April 23, 1925 in Wichita Falls, Texas to parents, W. J. and Frances Johnson Green, who later relocated to San Angelo. At age 16, Jack entered Texas A&M University, in the Class of ‘45. His graduation was delayed by service in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1946. Although he was then offered a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis organization, Jack instead returned to Texas A&M, where he earned a B.S. in Geological Engineering in 1948. He then pursued graduate studies in Petroleum Geology and Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines. While at Texas A&M, Jack was a member of the famous Singing Cadets. Thus, he was a long-term member of The San Angelo A&M Club, the 12th Man Foundation, as well as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
Jack met and married Billy Jo Sweatt of Menard, Texas, in 1950. They were married for 58 years, until her death in 2008. Together, they raised four children.
Jack enjoyed a successful career as an oil and gas driller and operator in the Permian Basin for over 60 years. He served as an independent geologist and oil producer from 1949-1953, and then organized and served as the president of Piedmont Oil Co. from 1953-1954. In 1954, Jack organized Fortune Drilling Company in which he served as president and general partner to John L. Nolen until they sold the drilling operations to Transcontinental Oil Corp. in 1977. Jack continued to serve as the Vice President of Transcontinental’s Fortune Drilling Corporation Division, as well as its West Texas Geologist and Exploration Manager, until 1980. Jack continued to serve as the president of Fortune Production Co., first as John Nolen’s partner until his death, and thereafter as a sole proprietor.
An avid bowler, Jack was also a founder and owner of the Sherwood Lanes Bowling Alley in San Angelo from 1954 through 1958. He managed construction and oversaw the operations of the bowling alley, and he bowled in community teams throughout his adult life.
Jack will also be remembered as a steadfast community servant in San Angelo. He served on the board of directors for the San Angelo Independent School District from 1959 through 1965, with service as its treasurer from 1959 through 1961 and as its vice president from 1962 through 1965. He served on the board of directors for the First National Bank of San Angelo and the First City Texas Bank of San Angelo from 1977 through 1994. In addition, Jack served as a director of the San Angelo YMCA from 1964 through 1970, and served as its president from 1968 through 1970.
Jack shared his love and talent for baseball by coaching. He served as the President of the San Angelo Teenage Baseball Association from 1969-1971. He managed and coached boys’ baseball teams, ages 14 and under, from 1963 through 1967. Most notably, Jack coached the Tight Base Freshman League’s Central National Bank Team from 1968 through 1969, and that team won the state championship title in 1968. Jack’s son was a member of the state championship team. Jack then coached the Downtown Optimist International team for young men aged 15 and 16 from 1970 through 1971.
In addition to his love for baseball and bowling, Jack was a private pilot and avid snow skier. He was particularly proud that he was still actively snow skiing with his children at 76 years of age and piloting his plane at age 82. Since 2013, Jack has resided at Carillon in Lubbock, Texas, where he was blessed with many friends.
Jack is survived by his four children: daughter, Gail Fargason of Lubbock; daughter, Jackie Green of San Antonio; son, Howard W. (“Wes”) Green, Jr. and wife, Laren, of San Angelo; and daughter, Dulcie Wink and husband, Marc, of Houston. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Lisa Gerloff and husband, Mark, of Spring; Trent Taylor and wife, Brandi, of Amarillo; Tessa Easterling of San Angelo; Matthew Green and wife, Rebecca, of San Angelo; and Connor McMahan and wife, Alexandra, of Wayne, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren: Garrett, Grayson, Jenay, Tanner, Alex, Cole, Chase, McKinley, Grant, Annie, Tegan and Cora.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The San Angelo A&M Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1122 San Angelo, TX 76902, The American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.
