Sunnyvale Planning Commissioner Bo Chang died on Jan. 8, according to city officials. There were no further details about the death as of press time. Chang was in his early 40s.

The planning commission will continue to hold meetings, but now has only three members. Commissioners Gustav Larsson and Glenn Hendricks were elected to the city council in November, and Arcadi Kolchak recently resigned.

The commission held a moment of silence in honor of Chang at its Jan. 13 meeting, but not before Vice Chair Russell Melton shared a few words.

"Bo was happy to let the other commissioners ask the questions to get the information he needed. And at the end of each agenda item, Bo made his decision based on the facts, made his decision based on policy and cast his vote accordingly, which is what being a planning commissioner is all about," Melton said, adding that in the six years Chang served on the commission, he participated in 131 public hearings.

Chang ran against Councilman Pat Meyering in the 2011 Sunnyvale City Council election. The city council's Jan. 14 meeting was also closed in Chang's honor.

"Most of us knew Bo personally, because he was rooted in Sunnyvale and an active member of our community," Mayor Jim Griffith said at the end of the meeting.

Chang lived in Sunnyvale for 17 years. He was a real estate broker in Sunnyvale and was a certified residential specialist, a certified business broker, and a certified California residential manager. He earned a master's degree in business administration and was the owner of BC Realty on Wolfe Road, near El Camino Real.

Chang was also active in the community. He was a member of the Lower Peninsula Flood Protection and Watershed Advisory Committee and Sunnyvale Planning Commission since 2007, serving as chair in 2009-10. He also served on the Charter Review Committee in 2006-07, and was a Leadership Sunnyvale graduate that same year.

He was also a City Skills program graduate and Sunnyvale Alliance Soccer Club member since 2004.

Chang leaves behind a wife and two daughters. A memorial service was held on Jan. 16 at Spangler Mortuaries on N. Sunnyvale Avenue.

"I am incredibly saddened by this news," Hendricks said in an email. "Bo was a friend, and I learned a great deal from him on our joint time on the city planning commission."
