John Madison Mayes, Aggie class of '50, of Stephenville, Texas, ( formerly of Cyril, OK, and Port Arthur, TX) died September 25, 2014. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific: the invasion of Guam.
John entered Tarleton College his first year with his wife and then transferred to Texas A&M University/College Station to graduate in Mechanical Engineering. He spent most of his years with Texaco in Port Arthur as Chief Maintenance Engineer; and, with Oklahoma
Refining as Plant Manager. In retirement, he enjoyed cattle ranching. Survivors are his wife married for 69 years, Wanda Walker Mayes; sons Ronald and John Mayes; daughter Debra Howard; and ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two sisters and
several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mayes was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Gary Mayes, and three sisters. John left a legacy of working on the fourth generation of Texas Aggies. Whoop!
