As a sixth generation Texan, Charles spent his youth in Forney, Texas, as the only child of Juanita Elizabeth and Robert Donald Futrell. Charles earned his BBA and MBA degrees from the University of North Texas and his PhD in Business Administration from the
University of Arkansas. In 1976 Charles accepted a role as a Professor of Marketing at Texas A&M University, after a career in sales.
At A&M Charles gained a distinguished reputation as a classroom instructor, mentor, researcher and author who generously shared his teaching materials with others. He received wide recognition for his contributions to the fields of personal selling, sales management,
research methodology and marketing management. One of his most significant scholarly innovations was his study of faith-based marketing and his incorporation of Christian principles, especially the Golden Rule, in his teaching, research and publications.
During his academic career, which spanned four decades, he published extensively in leading scholarly journals and authored books on personal selling and sales management that have been widely adopted at colleges and universities worldwide. His professional
honors include the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Teaching Award, Federated Professor of Marketing, American Marketing Association Sales Special Interest Group Lifetime Achievement Award, American Marketing Association Sales
Special Interest Group Excellence in Teaching Award, Mu Kappa Tau National Marketing Honor Society Award for Exceptional Scholarly Contribution to the Sales Profession, Mays Business School Distinguished Achievement Award for Research, and the Sales and Marketing
Executives International Marketing Educator of the Year Award. An article in the Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management ranked Charles as one of the top three sales researchers in America. One of Charles’ most valued recognitions at A&M was his Fish
Camp Namesake designation in 2001. Upon his retirement from the A&M faculty in April 2014, the Marketing Department announced the establishment of the Dr. Charles M. Futrell Scholarship in his honor. The following month he was designated Emeritus Professor
of Marketing at the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University by the TAMU Board of Regents.
Charles was a man of many accomplishments and accolades. Most importantly, he was man of deep faith and a gentle, humble, loving, witty, generous husband, father and friend. Charles is survived by his wife, Sue and children, Amy Futrell and Greg Futrell, as
well as his extended family.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude and love for the amazing kindness of others. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the following:
