Col. Mitchel Goldenthal (U.S. Army, Ret.) passed away at the age of 93 on October 18, 2014. He was born in NYC. His parents were Wolf Goldenthal and Ida Abramovici, both immigrants from Romania. Mitchel Goldenthal distinguished himself as a dedicated soldier and inspiring community leader. Early on, he demonstrated his devotion to national defense by enlisting in the D.C. National Guard in 1937 while a junior in high school. He always viewed this National Guard service as very helpful in his development.

Mitchel graduated from the USMA (West Point) in January 1943. Additionally, he received an MS in engineering from Texas A&M in 1947.

His military service included time in both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Army Signal Corps. He served onsite in WWII (European theater), the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Also, he was Commander of the Army's Satellite Communications Agency at Fort Monmouth, NJ. In his last military assignment, he served as the Commander of Fort Sam Houston, TX from 1971-73. He received the Purple Heart during service as a combat engineer in WWII. He received many other awards during his military career, e.g., 4 Legion of Merit and 3 Bronze Star Medals.

He married Helen Louise (Bales) Goldenthal in 1951, an Army nurse who he met at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Helen was very active in community service. Mitch and Helen organized duplicate bridge groups at a number of military posts.

After retirement to Hill Country Village (HCV), TX, Mitchel became involved in civilian community affairs. He was elected City Councilman in 1974 and elected Mayor of HCV in 1976. Mitch and Helen enjoyed playing golf for many years into retirement.
