CORPUS CHRISTI, TX. - 
Eldon Wayne Long, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 8. He was born in Denton on September 9, 1925, to Jay B. Long and Zola Bland Howard Long. 
He graduated from San Benito High School in 1942 and attended Texas A & M College Station to play football with the Kiddy Korps. He left to enter the army and married Charlene Frances Lang, a high school sweetheart.
After serving in World War II, he finished college in 1948 at North Texas State University and then moved to Harlingen to teach and coach. There he took two 5A basketball teams to the state playoffs. He received a master's degree in Economics from North Texas in 1952. In 1960 he went to Corpus Christi to coach the Del Mar Vikings, winning conference until the college ended athletics. 
He became Dean of Student Activities at Del Mar in 1964 and was Vice President of Student Affairs when he retired in 1989.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, reader and land manager. In 1991 he moved to his ranch in the Hill Country and returned to Corpus Christi in 2011.
He is survived by four children Sherrie Linsteadt (Don), Terry Long (Mary Ann), Charla Long and Jim Long (Karen). His ten grandchildren are Tina Thorpe Mullener (Robert), Carrie Long Brenon (John), Billy Lindley (Lindsey), Christiaan Shaddock (Tish), Kelley Linsteadt Chavez (Anthony), Cori Linsteadt, Jonathan Shaddock (Brandi), Blair Long Cuherpin (Daryle), Karyn Linsteadt, and Klayton Connor Shaddock.; his 17 great grandchildren are Maryn Corkran, Johnathon Mullener, Joshua Mullener, Abigail Brenon, Aiden Brenon, Addison Brenon, Brooke Lindley, Bradyn Lindley, Annie Rose Lindley, Lexi Reams, Stella Shaddock, Jack Chavez, Peter Chavez, Teddy Chavez, Anna Chavez, Mattisen Rivera, and Mason Shaddock.
A memorial service will be held at St Patrick Church, 3350 S. Alameda, Corpus Christi, on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
