Dean Herbert Garrison, Sr.
February 25, 1929  -  October 4, 2014

Big Rapids – Dean Herbert Garrison, Sr., 85, of Big Rapids, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Metron of Big Rapids. Dean was born February 25, 1929 in Detroit to the late Nora (Kelly) Garrison and late Neal J. Garrison. In 1950, he married Geraldine E. Thompson who survives. 

Dean came to Ferris State University in 1970 as Full Professor of Physics. From 1972 to 1983 he served as Head of Department of Physical Sciences, returning to teaching in 1983. In 1987 Dean became self-employed as a licensed private investigator under the name The Rebus Group. Prior to 1970, he taught at Wheaton College, Albion College, Indiana Institute of Technology and Huntington College. Dean received his Ph. D. from Texas A & M University, a Master’s from Toledo University and a Bachelor of Science from Huntington College. He graduated from Ypsilanti High School. For many years, Dean has been a volunteer with Women Information Services assisting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. He was also a member of the Victim Services Unit at the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office.

He is survived by daughter, Joy (Myron) Daniels of Noblesville, IN; son, Dean Jr. (Cheryl) of Grand Rapids, MI; granddaughter, Kathryn of Washington State; and grandson, Andrew, serving in the United States Navy; plus many nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by brothers, Robert (Dorothy), and Warren; and sisters, Carolyn (Robert) O’Brien and Shirley Walters

A memorial service for Dean will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Gary deBock officiating. Family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 am. Memorial contributions in Dean’s name may be made to the Trinity Evangelical Free Church building fund.
