Bill Story(1925 - 2014)
October 31, 1925 – September 22, 2014
WACO On Monday, September 22, 2014, Billy (Bill) B. Story passed away peacefully in New Braunfels, Texas. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco with Frank Wallace officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 26, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room at 6101 Bosque Blvd. in Waco.
Bill was born in Oklaunion, Texas, to Billie Gay Story and Iris Oma Lancaster Story on October 31, 1925. The family moved then from Oklaunion to Diboll, Texas, where he went on to graduate, with honors, from Diboll High School in 1943.
He entered college at Texas A&M University in the fall of 1943 and was a member of the track team. Bill began his military service with the Army on May 13, 1944, and was discharged on October 11, 1945. He then enrolled in Baylor University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in May of 1948. While attending Baylor he met Helen Joyce Schroeder. They were married on November 25, 1948, in Waco.
After graduation, Bill accepted an accounting position with Price Waterhouse in Houston where he and Helen lived for two years until they returned to Waco, where he started an accounting practice with Jamie Anderson. During their 10 years there, two sons, Mark and Alan, and a daughter, Linda, were born. The family then moved to Odessa, Texas, in 1960, where Bill worked for Key Investment Company and Ormand Industries. Moving from there to Dallas in 1969, Bill worked as a land developer on projects in Dallas, Garland, Corinth and various other locations in the metroplex.
Returning to Waco in November of 1983, he went to work for Texas Life Insurance Company from which he retired in 1992. While enjoying retirement with his family and doing some traveling, his wife, Helen, passed away unexpectedly on June 1, 1995.
In December of 1996, Bill met Nell Smith from Round Rock, through mutual friends in Waco, and they were married on June 6, 1998. Along with his three children and two grandchildren, this union added three step children, eight step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren to the family. After marrying, they continued to live in Waco where they were members of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of the Frank Wilson Sunday School Class.
Bill continued enjoying his retirement while taking many trips with Nell and their family. He and Nell were huge Lady Bear Basketball fans and season ticket holders. After suffering a stroke in 2008, his mobility continued to decline leading to knee replacement surgery on September 2, 2014. Although the surgery was successful, his body was unable to adjust and he passed away early on the morning of September 22.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and daughter.
Bill is survived by his wife, Nell; her three children and their families and son, Dr. Mark Story and his wife, Peggie, son, Alan Story and his wife, Jaye; granddaughter, Elizabeth Potts and her husband, Randy, and grandson, Matthew and his fiancé, Mary Capstick.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr.Mark Story, Alan Story, Matthew Story, Randy Potts, Joe Spivey and Mike Shield.
