Published in Houston Chronicle from Oct. 5 to Oct. 6, 2014

Robert Stanley "Bob" Winter
Robert Stanley "Bob" Winter passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 11th of September 2014, at the age of 90. He was loved by his many friends, who will miss his humor, wit, and ability to make them smile and laugh.
Bob was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the 14th of May 1924, and raised in Galveston. He often shared his fond memories of growing up in Galveston, and attending Ball High School. Bob graduated from Texas A&M University in 1945 after returning from World War II, where he served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army 42nd Infantry Division. Throughout the War he was stationed in various areas of Europe, contributing to numerous U.S military successes, including the liberation of Dachau.
After graduating from Texas A&M, he returned to Galveston where he married Diane Schmidt. They soon moved to Dallas, where they started their family in 1957. Bob and Diane and their first son, Robert relocated to Lubbock in 1958 where Paul was born. Bob and his family settled in Houston in 1964, where he retired from Travelers Insurance Company after 29 years of service. He spent the next 35 years of his insurance career in private practice until retiring from Bowen, Miclette & Britt, Inc. in 2010.
Bob and Diane were known for their active lifestyle and traveled worldwide to over 50 different countries. He enjoyed history and the adventure of travel, often returning to the many sites he had visited in Europe during the war.
Bob was an active supporter and contributor to many Charitable Organizations and causes during his lifetime. He also gave his time tirelessly to Rotary International and served as President of the University Area Rotary Club.
Bob's love for Texas A&M was shown through his lifetime of generous giving and donations. He was an Endowed Century Club member and Distinguished Donor to the 12th Man Foundation. He also provided an afterlife gift to Texas A&M as a Heritage member of the Texas A&M Foundation Legacy Society. Bob was committed to furthering the educational needs of young people, and in 1999 he and Diane endowed a permanent scholarship at the Texas A&M College of Education.
The family would like to thank Karena Kirk and her caregivers and the staff at Memorial Hermann Hospital for their caring and supportive help for Bob.
Bob is proceeded in death by his wife, Diane S. Winter; his brother, Charles D. Winter Jr.; his father, Charles D. Winter, Sr.; his mother, Kathleen Nell Winter; his father-in-law, Herbert E. Schmidt; and mother-in-law, Harriett L. Schmidt. He is survived by his two sons, Robert S. Winter, Jr., of Menlo Park, California and Paul D. Winter of Memphis, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Haidee G. Winter; niece, Kathleen Winter and nephew, Raymond Charles Winter.
A memorial reception, in celebration of Bob's life, is to be conducted from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 7th of October, in the grand foyer of Geo. H Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
