Wendell "Doc" Roy, died June 26, 2014 at his home in Fort Collins, CO, at the age of 82. He was born April 22, 1932 at Millsap, Texas to Dalton and Marie Roy. Following high school, he served 4 years in the Navy, much of his time on the aircraft carrier, Essex, with tours in the Philippines, Japan, and Korea. His lifetime love of airplanes started at this time.
He married Margaret "Margo" Jones, on June 8, 1957, in Weatherford, Texas and they were married for 57 years. He began college following his discharge from the Navy, receiving Bachelor and Master's degrees from North Texas State University. In 1963 he earned the first Doctor of Industrial Arts Education degree at Texas A&M University. His teaching career was as follows: West Texas State, University of West Florida, University of Northern Colorado, and retired from Colorado State University. He was a past member of the Gideons International. Following retirement he worked part-time at Al's Newsstand, in Old Town, and made many new friends. He was called the "Renaissance Man" because of his varied interests and talents, but airplanes always remained his passion. He founded an Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter in Greeley in the '70's and remained a member until his death. Among the many awards he received over the years were Colorado Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year and the prestigious Award of Merit from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He also served as president of the SME Southwestern Region.
Survivors include his wife Margaret "Margo" and two sons: Alan and wife Kristen of Morrison, CO; and Evin and wife Amy, of Greeley, CO. He was beloved "PawPaw" to his grandchildren: Amy, Trevor, Jonathan, Zachary, Ethan, Michael and Lucy. Survivors also include brothers Edgar (Jean), of Holliday, TX, Monte (Carolyn) of Millsap, Texas, and his sister-in-law Mary Lou Roy of Arlington, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert.
