Warren A. Criswell
(December 28, 1924 - July 14, 2014)

Dr. Warren Alvord Criswell DVM, 89, of Bay City passed away July 14, 2014. He was born December 28, 1924 in Throckmorton, Texas to the late Robert Lee Criswell and Goldie Frances Detwiler Criswell.

He was born and raised on the SMS Ranch in Throckmorton County, Texas. Warren grew up around cattle and horses participating in the annual round-up and branding of new calves. His love of animals started at a very early age.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from December 1942 to August 1951 achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. Warren met his sweetheart, Dorothey Jane Brian, while attending North Texas State Teachers College. They were married in Winters, Texas on June 6, 1945.

Warren received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M College in 1955. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Bay City where he started his practice. Being a veterinarian was never just a job, it was his passion, and he truly loved what he was doing. That was evident in the way in which he interacted with all animals (large and small, domestic and wild) and their parents.

His practice spanned over 50 years in the Bay City community. During that time, he contributed countless hours to the care of animals for his clients, during the annual livestock show, unwanted animals in the shelter, and for the local wildlife rehabilitation efforts.

Family was also very important to Warren. He raised his children to love and respect one another and passed on that deep love of animals. July 12th, his beloved Dorothey Jane went to be with The Lord. Two days later Warren joined her, united once more.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Dalton Lee Criswell, Goldie Elverna Criswell Whitaker, and Frankie Fay Criswell Sohengen.

Survivors include daughter Dorothey Ann Criswell of Richmond, TX; sons Robert Warren Criswell & wife Beth of Tarpon Springs, FL and Brian Lee Criswell & wife Renee of Kennewick, WA and granddaughter Briana Criswell of Kennewick, WA.

In 2007 Warren received the honor of being Bay City Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year; he was a proud member of the Bay City Lion’s Club since moving to Bay City and served as president and chairman of the Rice Festival; recipient of the Lions Club International Foundation, Melvin Jones Fellow honor for dedicated humanitarian services; served 25 years on the Bay City Independent School District Appraisal Board; life member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas; member of the Matagorda County Fair & Livestock Association; member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed bird hunting at every available opportunity.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5pm until 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Battle, John Ashcraft, Tony Wells, Billie Mann, Herff Cornelius and Mack McLeod. Honorary pallbearers will be Bert Huebner and James Sowell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the charity of your choice.
