Dr. Ronald Jay Orrell, 72, of College Station passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014. The family will receive visitors from 4:00 to 6:00p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 217 W. 26th Street, Bryan with, The Rev. Daryl T. Hay officiating. A military burial will be held Friday, August 15, 2014 at 2:30p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Dr. Orrell was born in New Orleans, LA in 1941 to Thomas Edward and Ethel Lee Orrell. He received a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine Degree from Texas A&M University in 1968. Ron then served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970 and subsequently served in the U.S. Army Reserves and National Guard. Following his discharge from the Army, Dr. Orrell practiced small animal medicine in San Antonio until 1979. He returned to school, attending the University of Juarez, earning an MD degree. Dr. Orrell interned at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, MD and did his residency training in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He practiced anesthesia in Baltimore, MD until his retirement in 2006. After retirement, Ron returned to one of his favorite places, College Station.

He was well respected by members of both the veterinary and medical community. In 1977 it was Dr. Orrell’s honor to serve as President of the Bexar County Veterinary Medical Association and in 1997 again he served his profession as President of the Baltimore County Medical Association. In addition, Dr. Orrell was a member of American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and a life member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.

A faithful member of the Episcopal Church, Ron served on vestries of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, San Antonio and The Church of The Good Shepherd in Baltimore, MD. While in Baltimore, he was also a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity projects. Ron never knew a stranger and was well liked by everyone he met. He was a humble, gentle soul and worked hard every day; he set a wonderful example of what a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend should be. He will be greatly missed.

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Anne Parker Orrell of College Station; daughter, Anne Elizabeth Maddox, her husband Doug and their children Elizabeth Grace, Douglas and Evan; son, Ronald Braxton Orrell, his wife Sara and their children, Braxton and Emily; and daughter, Jaye Lange, her husband Todd and their children, Parker, Anna Riley, Bexar and Colby. He also leaves behind, brothers, Douglas Orrell and Greg Orrell and wife, Denise; sisters, Peggy Tyler and husband, David and Johanna Weber and husband, David; brother-in-law, Dr. Gerald Parker and wife, Denise as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any of the following in Dr. Orrell’s honor: St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 217 W. 26th Street, Bryan, TX 77803; The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, checks should be made payable to Texas A&M University Foundation with notation of memorial to Dr. Ronald Orrell, mail to Dean’s Office College of Veterinary Medicine, TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4461, Attention: Dr. O.J. Woytek; Brazos Valley Hospice, 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, TX 77803; or a charity of your choice.
