Barry Gene Thompson, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 13, 2014, in Arlington. Service: A private family service is planned for early May. As he wished, Barry donated his body to University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Memorials: If desired, a memorial gift may be made in Barry G. Thompson's honor to the Armed Forces Foundation, armedforcesfoundation.org, or a charity of choice . Barry was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Fort Worth to Hazel LaVelle Aaron and Charles Lincoln Thompson. After graduating from Lake Worth High School, he earned a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Texas A&M in College Station and immediately entered the Air Force as a second lieutenant. His Air Force career was primarily in the manpower and personnel fields, where he was recognized for his excellence with numerous awards. He was proud to have been chosen to attend the prestigious Armed Forces Staff College, now the Joint Forces Staff College, in Norfolk, Va. Barry was also chosen from among his peers as the first Air Force officer to participate in a 10-month Training-With-Industry program with United Airlines at its headquarters in Chicago, Ill. His last duty assignment was serving as assistant inspector general for Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) headquarters in Dallas. Barry was a talented craftsman and used that talent to not only put himself through college but also continue with his hobbies and interests after retirement from the Air Force in 1984. A special thanks from Barry's children goes out to the staff of the Clare Bridge unit of Broadway Plaza Pecan Park in Arlington and Envoy Hospice of Fort Worth for their loving care and support of their beloved father. Barry was predeceased by his parents and his loving aunt and uncle, Billye and Elton Langford of Fort Worth. Survivors: Daughter, Valerie Mills (Dan) and granddaughter, Elsa, of Caldwell, Idaho; son, John Thompson (Terry) and grandson, Gregory, of Charleston, S.C., and granddaughter, Carla Henry, of Denver, Colo.; son, Timothy Thompson and grandsons, Reiss and Logan, of Fort Worth; siblings, Donald Jones, Roger Jones, Juanell Allen, Nancy Moxie and Betty Posey; former wife and mother of his children, Susan Horton; and former wife, Becky Green and her daughters, Candice Stoner and Jessikka Ward, and the latter's children, Matthew and Bailey; and Barry's longtime friend, Brenda Bell.
