STRATFORD — Alfred Edward Pronger Jr., 93, of Stratford died Monday, March 17, 2014.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Stratford with Steve Ulrey, pastor, and Steve Baskin officiating. Burial will follow in Stratford Cemetery. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors of Stratford.

Alfred was born June 14, 1920, on Pronger Brothers Ranch southwest of Stratford. He was the youngest of five children born to Fred and Ivie Pronger. He began his formal education at the one room Pronger school located on the ranch. He graduated from Stratford High School and Texas A&M. Upon graduation in 1942, he enlisted in the Army. He served in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery in New Guinea and the Philippines. Upon his discharge at the end of World War II, he returned to the family ranch.

He married Jimmie Ruth Herring of Tyler on June 8, 1947. Together, they raised five children. Jimmie preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 2006.

Alfred enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and farming and believed in service to his community, his country, and his alma mater. He served on the Stratford and Sherman County School boards. He was very active in service to First United Methodist Church and served in many leadership capacities. He served in many leadership capacities on the boards of Consumers Co-Op, Sherman County Farm Bureau, Sherman County Fair and Livestock Show, Rita Blanca Electric Co-Op and the Texas Hereford Association as well as several regional Hereford associations. He served as the president of Panhandle Hereford Breeders Association. He was honored as a lifetime member of Stratford Lions Club, American Legion and Stratford Chamber of Commerce. Alfred was named Stratford Citizen of the Year in 1970 by Stratford Chamber of Commerce. In 1992, he was honored by Texas Farm Bureau as a Pioneer of Texas Agriculture. In 1994, he was named an honorary member of Texas Hereford Association. In 2004, he was named Sherman County Old Timers King by Prospectus Study Club.

Under his management, the ranch was recognized by The American Hereford Association and Texas Department of Agriculture for more than 100 years of continuous operation. Alfred was active in the Sherman County Historical Commission and in establishing Sherman County Museum, and he remained active until the end.

In 1952, Alfred was instrumental in organizing the XIT A&M Club to promote A&M and establish scholarships for area students.

Alfred was preceded in death by his wife and a grandson, Blaine Killian.

Survivors include two daughters, Jana Pronger of Borger and Jill Killian and husband Dr. John Killian of the ranch; three sons, Fred Pronger and wife Marsha and Jeff Pronger, all of the ranch, and David Pronger and wife Karen of Burleson; seven grandchildren, Janell Miller and husband Jason of Abernathy, Patrick Pronger and wife Sarah of Sunray, Katie Killian, Kavan Killian and Bryce Killian, all of the ranch, and Caroline Pronger and Brent Pronger of Burleson; and three great-grandchildren, Landry and Sydney Miller and Rance Pronger.

Family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church of Stratford or XIT A&M Club scholarship fund, 3000 Hip-O Lane, Dalhart, TX 79022; or a charity of choice.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Stratford.
