Ed Thorpe, loved by his family, friends, and community died March 18, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Martha Berry Thorpe, his daughter, Anne Thorpe South; son-in-law, Patrick South; grandchildren Harrison and Rebecca South; sister Clara Thorpe Hill; brother-in-law Jim Hill and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded by son David Thorpe, mother and father Elizabeth Brock Thorpe and Edwin H. Thorpe, Sr, and sister, Beverly Thorpe.
Ed Thorpe brought kindness wherever he went. Those around him found themselves engaged with someone who showed a genuine interest in their life. He was an inspirational person who dealt with difficult times by finding something positive in every situation. He exemplified leadership in his service and dedication to his family and community. His family and friends described him as upbeat, always ready to help, enthusiastic, inspiring, a mentor, a servant and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was born in Corpus Christi, grew up in East Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1958. While at A&M he was a member of the Corp of Cadets, played the base horn in the "Fightin Texas Aggie Band" and was a member of the Cross Country Team. He served 23 years in the United States Air Force. He always found ways to serve the community in every place he lived. In the greater Randolph area he was a member and president of the Rotary Club and he started a local social club for adults with special needs known as the Roadrunners. After retiring he was one of the founding partners of Melick and Associates CPA firm (now known as Armstrong and Vaughan CPA firm). After selling his partnership he poured his energies into Universal City United Methodist Church in Universal City, Texas. He spearheaded the implementation of the Praise service to reach out to those without a church, he taught and trained others to teach exciting, fun and contagious approaches to evangelism. He started a greeter program to make sure that every visitor and member felt welcome at the church services. He taught Sunday school classes, newcomer's classes, and was part of the media team. He was a member of the finance committee and a member of the building committee. Through his hard work and dedication the Universal City United Methodist Church is adding on a much needed education building. His work was recognized in 2006 with the Southwest Texas Methodist Evangelism Award.

Services for him will be held at Universal City United Methodist Church located at 90 Winn Av. in Universal City, Texas at 1: 00 pm. Saturday March 22, 2014. The visitation will be Friday night from 4-8 pm at Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, Texas. Ed will be buried at his wife's family cemetery in Lufkin, Texas on Monday at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Center, 1218 Arion Parkway Suite 102 San Antonio, TX 78216 or to Universal City United Methodist Church building funds.
