J. Alan Allert 1949-2014
Dr. John Alan Allert, 64, passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, in Columbia.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, May 23, at his home in Columbia.
He was born June 13, 1949, to Maxine and William Allert in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Allert received a Bachelor of Science in 1971 and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1972 from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He practiced veterinary medicine in Mason, Texas, and in San Antonio, Texas, before returning to TAMU to teach and do research in 1975. He was there until 1985, when he moved to the University of Missouri's College of Veterinary Medicine to continue in academia.
After retirement from teaching and research, Dr. Allert worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, Columbia Environmental Research Center, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on numerous research programs.
Dr. Allert later served as executive director at the Central Missouri Humane Society in Columbia. He was most proud of his dedicated staff and the many volunteers who work so hard to care for the abandoned animals of Central Missouri.
Dr. Allert was an accomplished woodworker, motorcyclist and outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed sharing his activities with family and friends.
He is survived by wife, Ann; sons Adam (Amy) and Daniel; their mother, Candace; brother Andrew; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous well-loved dogs.
