The Texas A&M chapter of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences is only in its first year, but already it’s making a name for itself in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

IAAS is a worldwide organization, popular in European universities but only recently making its way to the United States. Chief student leader Rachel Walther ’12 told Texas Aggie magazine of the organization’s trip to the Norman Borlaug World Food Prize conference at Iowa State University in the fall of 2011, made
possible thanks to financial support from The Association of Former Students.

“We weren’t planning on driving all the way to Iowa from here,” Rachel said as she explained the challenges they faced when trying to find the money to fund the trip. As a new student group, the chapter’s membership and funds are still growing. Without support from The Association, the group would not have been able to afford the trip.

Rachel said IAAS members were grateful for the funds they received from The Association. The organization also will be able to attend another conference this spring because of funding from donors to the Annual Fund. Walther said these opportunities are critical for the members to network with scientists and
researchers, which is part of the mission of the organization.
