Reginald Horace “Jack” Finney Jr.. 93, of Greenville passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Hunt Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Dr. D.D. Sumrall Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.

Mr. Finney was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Commerce; the son of Reginald Horace Finney Sr. and Valma Bracken Finney. He married Lou House in Paris, Texas, in 1938.

Mr. Finney retired from the bakery at the age of 40 and went on to be self-employed, working with investments. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville.

Surviving are his daughter, Jean Gibbs and husband Walter of Lindale; grandchildren, Stacy Dupell and husband J.R., Denise Davis and husband Bo, Jeff Townsend and wife Holly, Charles Hyde and wife Michelle and Zach Hyde; great-grandchildren, Justin Hyde, Dusty Davis, Laura (Davis) Curtis, Valerie Davis, Elizabeth Dupell and Jack Dupell and great-great grandchildren, Luke Curtis and Caleb Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and daughter, Patty Hyde.

Pallbearers are Ray Bankston, Bob Dial, Kelly Fincher, Hollis Russell, Terry Turner and Bob Walker.

The Man Who Loved People
Jack Finney 1916-2010
Many knew Jack Finney and those who didn’t
might recognize his name on one of the main thoroughfare’s
in Greenville, Jack Finney Blvd. He will
be remembered by many for the donation of one million
dollars to Hunt Memorial Hospital District Charitable
Health Foundation for the Jack and Lou Finney
Cancer Center. The city’s library, Walworth Harrison
Public Libray and Ja-Lu Swimming Pool are both located
on land that Mr. Finney and his wife donated
to the City of Greenville. In addition the music center
which is currently under construction at Texas A&M
Commerce wouldn’t have been possible without the
$500,000 donation made by the Finney’s. Mr. Finney
was also responsible for creating the “Most Worthy
Citizen Award” that is handed out annually by the
Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the Greenville
Board of Development in honor of people who go the
extra mile in our community. Jack Finney born August
15th, 1916 and lived his life here in Greenville,
will be missed.

Reginald H. 'Jack' Finney, Jr. '38, 83 of Greenville (formerly of Commerce and Paris) died Jan. 1, 2010. He retired as owner of Finney's Holsum Bread Co. in Greenville at age 40 and became self-employed in investments, land development and the breeding and showing of quarter horses. He served on the Texas A&M Board of Directors, now known as the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, from age 36 until 1959. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M in 1992. Survivors include a daughter; five grandchildren, including Jeffrey A. Townsend '91; six great-grandchildren, including Frat E. 'Dusty' Davis IV '04; and two great-great-grandchildren.
