July 11, 1919 - October 10, 2016

Maurice J. ("Red") Gremillion died on Monday, October 10, 2016 in Dallas, TX. He was born on July 11, 1919 in Beaumont, TX. Red grew up in Galveston, TX and graduated from Kirwin High School in 1937. After high school, he joined the Marines and served honorably in the Pacific in World War II, fighting for 4 years in many important battles on Guam, Tinian, Saipan and other islands. Red received numerous awards and recognitions for his service in combat. After World War II, he completed his education with degrees from Texas A&M and Wisconsin, married Frances Savage of Hubbard, TX and began a career as a foreign service officer for the U.S. State Department with tours in several Central and South American countries. After government service, Red taught in Texas public schools until his retirement. He is survived by his daughter Tara McCown, son Lance Gremillion, a few cousins, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and lots of friends and admirers. His beloved wife Frances died in 2009.

Red loved his country, Texas, his Catholic faith, his family, a good cigar and a glass of single malt scotch. A patriot, war hero, dedicated public servant, loving husband, father and grandfather, he was truly a shining example of the Great Generation. Semper Fi and Gig 'Em!
