Aggies BUILD

Stephanie Cannon '06 November 12, 2015 8:59 AM updated: November 13, 2015 10:02 AM

A Texas A&M's student-run BUILD project is helping what's likely to be thousands of Syrian migrants seeking shelter in Greece.

These Aggies -- well over 700 or so from various student organizations across campus -- worked for the last six weeks to turn four shipping containers into mobile medical clinics. The units will be used by clinicians and workers to improve the quality of and access to basic health care in regions that lack it, including Greece, Kenya, Haiti and Honduras.

Last year, funded in part by donors to The Association, BUILD workers completed four fully-furnished clinics before Thanksgiving and sent them to Honduras, Haiti and two to Guatemala. Next year, four more clinics -- each with enough supplies to help people for up to six months -- will be built.

That will make 12 Texas Aggie Medical Clinics in operation by next fall. The group then will move on to their next service project.

BUILD workers picked 12 for a reason. The number represents each of the 11 students and one former student killed when the 1999 Aggie Bonfire collapsed while under construction on campus. Each clinic is dedicated to one of the Aggies who died and a plaque with his or her name is on the wall.

BUILD is one of many Texas A&M programs that are supported by the generous contributions of tens of thousands of donors to The Association's Annual Fund. Support for student organizations, beloved traditions, scholarships and former student programs is made possible by the generous annual donations of former students, Aggie parents, Texas A&M faculty and staff and other active supporters of the Aggie Network.
