News from Texas A&M University
Five rescued, one killed in Sailing Team Accident
Five men representing Texas A&M Galveston in the Regata de Amigos, a race to Veracruz,
Mexico, from Galveston, were rescued from the Gulf of Mexico after their sailboat
capsized June 7. One man, 53-year-old Roger Stone, a Galveston resident and hired
safety officer for the trip, died in the accident. He is credited with saving two
students’ lives as the men escaped the sinking vessel. The crew of the 38-foot sailboat,
the Cynthia Woods, went missing in the early hours of June 7. Coast Guard officials
discovered the overturned ship later that day, and confirmed that the keel, the
part of a boat that keeps it balanced, was ripped off the vessel. Students Steven
Guy ’11, Joe Savana ’11, Travis Wright ’08, Ross James Busby ’08 and A&M Galveston
safety officer Steve Conway were rescued around 1 a.m. June 8, 23 miles south of
Freeport, after sharing four life vests to keep themselves afloat. The body of Stone,
a seasoned sailor, was recovered later with the sailboat’s wreckage. To read a full
timeline of the crew’s accident and rescue, visit

Aggie Astronaut Makes Second Trip To Space
Mike Fossum ’80, A&M’s first undergraduate degree recipient to fly on a space shuttle
in July 2006, returned to space May 31 to June 13. Fossum served as a mission specialist
for Mission STS-124, a trip made by the shuttle Discovery to launch equipment needed
to complete a laboratory on the International Space Station. Fossum was scheduled
to make three spacewalks during the journey, and on June 9—the morning he and the
rest of the crew were wakened with a recording of “The Spirit of Aggieland”—officials
from mission control told Fossum that he had moved to the No. 12 position on the
list of most hours walked in space. To watch Fossum’s special wakeup call, visit

Texas Clipper Now An Artificial Reef
The former training ship used for nearly 30 years by cadets at Texas A&M University
at Galveston is now an artificial reef. The 473-foot, 7,000-ton Texas Clipper was
purposely sunk Nov. 17 in the Gulf and is now home to a variety of fish and marine
life. It’s also a destination for scuba divers. “It’s a nice reef now and it should
become even more beautiful over the next few years,” said Kevin Buch, a diving safety
officer at Texas A&M-Galveston. “We’ve seen numerous varieties of fish, such as
amberjacks, groupers, red snappers and others.” The Artificial Reef Act of 1990
directed Texas Parks and Wildlife to promote and enhance the artificial reef potential
off the Texas coast. The ship is about 17 miles off the coast of South Padre Island.
