Federal Bonfire Lawsuit Reaches End
A federal lawsuit against officials at Texas A&M University ended Oct. 9 when
the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to reconsider a lower court's decision that officials
cannot be held responsible for the deaths and injuries in the 1999 bonfire collapse.
Twelve were killed and 27 injured in November 1999 when the 59-foot pile of more
than 5,000 logs collapsed as students were constructing it. In April, the 5th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's ruling that the concept of a "state-created
danger" was not an established law at the time of the accident. For more information,

Student Fee Increase Approved For MSC Renovations
Beginning next fall, A&M students will pay $60 more per semester to fund renovations
to the MSC. The student
fee will generate about two-thirds of the $122 million needed for the project, while
the remaining funds will come from donors.
Among the changes is the 12th Man Hall, an enclosed open-air walkway between the
MSC and Rudder Tower, and relocating the loading dock underground.
