News from Texas A&M University
Nov. 18 marked the eighth anniversary of the 1999 bonfire collapse, an accident that killed 12 students
and injured at least 27 others. Called by some the worst day in Aggie history, the date is now as an
annual tribute to those deceased and injured. In 2004, a memorial was completed on the site of the collapse.
Twelve portals point toward each fallen Aggie’s hometown. Between each portal, 27 stone panels connect
the portals to form a circle the exact size of the safety perimeter around the collapsed stack. During
Bonfire Remembrance Week, the Traditions Council and Bonfire Coalition for Students passed out fliers,
held posters, presented a poster display in the Memorial Student Center and sold remembrance bracelets.
The formal remembrance ended with a gathering Nov. 18 at 2:42 a.m. at the Bonfire Memorial. For more
information on the week, visit

Class Of 2008 Elephant Walk
The tradition of Elephant Walk continued Nov. 20. In a final symbolic pass across campus, the Class
of 2008 visited such landmarks as Kyle Field, the Quad, the H20 fountain, Fish Pond and the Sul Ross
statue. The event included food and music and a photo opportunity with two elephants outside the Clayton
W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. Now in its 81st year, Elephant Walk was established as a way for seniors
to reminisce and say goodbye to campus. The tradition has generally remained the same since the inaugural
1926 walk. For Elephant Walk’s history, visit,
